Backpacking in High Mountains

Backpacking in High Mountains

The high mountains of Colorado still had a lot of snow in mid June. In fact, the Arkansas river was close to flooding here in Canon City, despite there being no rain in weeks. The snow melt was enough to raise it to its highest level in years. But my friend Mike and I were still hoping to go backpacking up high.

We had been up to 9,000 feet a couple weeks earlier and saw just one snowbank in the woods. Driving home we could see that though there was a lot of snow in the high peaks of the northern Sangre De Christo mountains, it was in patches. There were large areas without snow, even above 13,000 feet. It was time to give it a try.

We decided on a two night trip to Bushnell Lakes and possibly to the top of Bushnell Peak (13,105 feet). About this time I received a phone call. I own a backpacking website, so I get emails with questions all the time, but this was only the second time someone had called me at home. The man on the other end was

Unknowns to Help You Win Your 2009 Fantasy Baseball League

Baseball is weird.

What other sport allows you to expand your roster by 60% for the last month of the season? Then, you have to decrease your roster by 15 players in time for the playoffs!

These September call up players can play a pivotal role down the stretch. So, I’m always amazed that teams don’t all call up 15 more players on September 1! I mean, why wait? You could have that speed merchant pinch runner from a Low A team that can steal that base and possibly earn a wild card spot for you!

Other guys, usually who play on less fortunate teams, get a chance to make an immediate impact. It’s these players that you should be looking for for your fantasy baseball stretch run.

Josh Anderson, OF — Braves’ center fielder Anderson led off for the Braves last night and had a 3 for 5 night. Since getting called up on August 28, after the Braves’ dealt Mark Kotsay to the Red Sox, he has started all four

What I Learned From an Old Dog

What I Learned From an Old Dog

Dog’s grow older sooner than we humans.  Watching them become cripled with arthritis and their eyesight begin to dim reminds us of our own inevitable deterioration as we age.
And so as I watch Hershey struggle up steps he once flew up  in two bounds,  his struggle mirrors my own as I, in effect, “go to the dogs.”
Hershey is a dark chocolate lab, 12 years old.  His arthritic legs sometimes are unable to take him up the six wooden steps to the back door after we let him out in the morning.  During April’s unseasonable  freezing weather he lay sprawled out, legs unable to get a grip on the ice, until I helped lift his heavy rear end.  My wife and I, both in our seventies, experience the same aches in our joints that Hershey uncomplainingly feels.
Hershey is really our youngest daughter’s dog.  She picked him out of a pond in Galveston, Texas when he was a puppy.  Galveston was one of her stops  on a meandering  drive across the country

Hudson Rodriguez Dating

Well the Yankees are in the ALCS this year for the first time in a while and I have a theory as to why that is. It must be Alex Rodriguez. The Yankee slugger has finally shaken his post season doubts and foibles and he is now on the road to the World Series (he’s the highest paid player in Baseball and has been MVP three times, plus he’s considered by many to be the best in game and yet he has never even played in, much less won a World Series).

But what’s driving Alex Rodriguez? Maybe it’s the fact that he’s dating movie star Kate Hudson. Yes, it’s true Hudson and Rodriguez are dating and she’s certainly having a good effect on the Yankee third-baseman.

In fact, the whole thing is actually somewhat serious according to a source in a recent issue in People Magazine. The source confirmed that A-Rod has introduced Hudson to a bunch of his friends. And I bet the folks in the dugout wouldn’t mind having her as a cheerleader!

And who gets
